Solar Suitability Depends on More Than Roof Space
Orientation, shading, roof condition and how your household uses electricity all shape whether panels are worthwhile - and what a technical survey should confirm before anything is specified.
Who this guidance is for
This page is for Surrey homeowners considering roof-mounted solar - whether you live in a detached house, semi, bungalow or a property with multiple roof planes. You may be at the early research stage or comparing options before committing to a survey.
Solar Surrey does not provide instant quotes or automated savings figures. Where suitable, solar can contribute meaningfully to your electricity use - but outcomes depend on your roof, usage and tariff.
Important: Generation estimates should only be provided after a site-specific survey. Panel count, layout and expected output vary significantly between neighbouring properties.
What actually determines solar suitability
Roof orientation and pitch
South-facing roofs generally receive the most direct sunlight in the UK, but east and west orientations can still perform well depending on pitch and shading. A survey maps usable roof area and identifies the most practical array layout.
Shading from trees and structures
Mature trees, neighbouring buildings and roof features can reduce output at certain times of day. Shading analysis helps determine whether micro-inverters, optimisers or layout changes may be appropriate - subject to survey findings.
Property type and roof condition
Detached homes, semis, bungalows and some townhouses may all be suitable where structurally sound roof areas exist. Roof age, covering type and load-bearing capacity should be assessed before panels are specified.
Energy use and export strategy
Your household consumption pattern influences how much solar generation you can use on-site. Battery storage or tariff choices may affect the overall system design - see our battery storage guidance for context.
Integration with battery, EV and electrical infrastructure
Solar panels are often planned alongside other home energy upgrades. If you expect to add battery storage or home EV charging, it is worth discussing these goals during your survey so cable routes, consumer unit capacity and future expansion are considered together.
Electrical infrastructure should be assessed before installation. Older consumer units or limited spare ways may need upgrading - this is normal and should be identified early rather than discovered on installation day.
Integrated system overviewWhat a proper solar survey should check
A proper solar survey is more than a satellite image review. Depending on your property, it may include:
- Roof inspection or detailed roof assessment (including pitch, orientation and condition)
- Shading analysis at representative times of year
- Review of your recent electricity bills or half-hourly data where available
- Assessment of the consumer unit, meter location and cable routes
- Discussion of battery or EV plans that may influence system design
- Equipment placement options and access for maintenance
Following the survey, you should receive a property-specific proposal - not a generic template. Solar Surrey can help you book a Technical Solar Review to begin this process.
Frequently asked questions
No. Suitability depends on roof structure, orientation, shading, usable area and your energy goals. Some properties may suit a smaller array; others may not be practical candidates. A technical survey is required to confirm.
We do not make zero-bill or energy independence claims. Solar can reduce grid imports where suitable, but you will still draw from the grid at night and during high-demand periods unless battery storage is included and appropriately sized.
Many domestic roof-mounted installations fall under permitted development, but exceptions apply - particularly for listed buildings, conservation areas and some flat roofs. Your surveyor or installer should confirm the position for your property.
